World Snooker's governing body has now reviewed evidence provided by the Strathclyde Police over allegations of suspicious betting on a match between Stephen Maguire and Jamie Burnett in 2008.
The WPBSA's findings agree that there was suspicious betting activity on this match by people outside of the sport and this required a detailed investigation by Strathclyde Police. However, there is no evidence to suggest that either player was involved in fixing the scoreline and therefore no regulatory action will be taken by the governing body against the players.
WPBSA Chairman, Jason Ferguson, said: "This investigation has been ongoing since 15 December 2008 and I am pleased to see this matter closed."
It stated that WPBSA has finished reviewing the evidence provided by the Police. They found that there is no evidence to support any of the two players was involved in match fixing. They will not take any regulatory action against the players. The investigation is now closed file.

Amendments To Official Snooker Rules

World Snooker has finalized the official rules of snooker and billards and it takes effective immediately.

For the below is the summary of amendments, or Click Here to download the full and updated rules. It operates in all World Snooker events.

The Referees need some time to revise the new rules :)

SECTION 2:

5. Striker and Turn

The person about to play or in play is the striker and remains so until the final stroke, or foul, of his turn is complete and the referee is satisfied that he has finally left the table. If a non-striker comes to the table, out of turn, he shall be considered as the striker for any foul he may commit before leaving the table. When the referee is satisfied that the above conditions have been met, the incoming striker's turn begins. His turn and his right to play another stroke ends when:

(a) he fails to score from a stroke; or
(b) he commits a foul; or
(c) he requests the opponent to play again after his opponent has committed a foul.

6. Stroke

(a) A stroke is made when the striker strikes the cue-ball with the tip of the cue.
(b) A stroke is fair when no infringement of Rule is made.
(c) A stroke is not completed until:
(i) all balls have come to rest;
(ii) the striker has stood up, in readiness for a succeeding stroke, or leaving the table;
(iii) any equipment being used by the striker has been removed from a hazardous position; and
(iv) the referee has called any score relevant to the stroke.
(d) A stroke may be made directly or indirectly, thus:
(i) a stroke is direct when the cue-ball strikes an object ball without first striking a cushion;
(ii) a stroke is indirect when the cue-ball strikes one or more cushions before striking an object ball.
(e) Following the final stroke of the opponent's turn, if an incoming player plays a stroke/strikes the cue-ball before the balls have come to rest, he shall be penalised as if he were the striker, and his visit to the table shall end.

SECTION 3:

8. Touching Ball

(g) If a stationary object ball, not touching the cue-ball when examined by the referee, is later seen to be in contact with the cue-ball before a stroke has been made, the balls shall be repositioned by the referee to his satisfaction. This also applies to a touching ball which later, when examined by the referee is not touching, the balls shall be repositioned by the referee to his satisfaction.

13. Play Again

Once a player has requested an opponent to play again after a foul or requested the replacement of ball(s) after a Foul and a Miss, such request cannot be withdrawn. The offender, having been asked to play again, is entitled to:

(a) change his mind as to:
(i) which stroke he will play; and
(ii) which ball on he will attempt to hit;
(b) score points for any ball or balls he may pot.

14. Foul and a Miss

(b) If the striker, in making a stroke, fails to first hit a ball on when there is a clear path in a straight line from the cue-ball to any part of any ball that is or could be on, the referee shall call FOUL AND A MISS, unless:
(i) any player needed penalty points before, or as a result of, the stroke being played; (see (b) (ii)
(ii) before or after the stroke, the points available on the table are equal to the points difference excluding the value of the re-spotted black;
and the referee is satisfied that the miss was not intentional.

(d) After the cue-ball has been replaced under this Rule, and the striker fouls any ball, including the cue-ball while preparing to play a stroke, a miss will not be called if a stroke has not been played. In this case the appropriate penalty will be imposed; and the ball on shall be the same as prior to the last stroke made, namely:
(i) any Red, where Red was the ball on;
(ii) the colour on, where all Reds were off the table; or
(iii) a colour of the striker's choice, where the ball on was a colour after a Red had been potted;
and
(iv) the next player may elect to play the stroke himself or ask the offender to play again from the position left; or
(v) the next player may ask the referee to replace all balls moved to their original position and have the offender play again from there; and
(vi) if the above situation arises during a sequence of miss calls, any warning concerning the possible awarding of the frame to his opponent shall remain in effect.

(e) All other misses will be called at the discretion of the referee, unless, before or after the stroke, the points available on the table are equal to the points difference excluding the value of the re-spotted black.

A short chat with Mark Williams

Recently Mark Williams had a short online chat with his Chinese fans on Chinese Weibo (some sites like Twitter in China). The Chinese fans raised some very interesting question to have Mark answered. I have translated the questions from Chinese to English for your convenience! :)

Mark's game

Fans: A few season ago you was at the trough of your career but now you are at the top again! How did you do it?

Mark: I got back up the rankings by shear hard work and practicing as long as I could, and started to get my confidance back by doing that.

Fans: You had a remarkable performance in the last season, what are looking for in the next season? There are new overseas ranking events, do you think it is beneficial to players?

Mark: I just want to try and do the best I can and hopefully stay up the rankings, but if I could manage to win the World Championship once more that would be the icing on the cake for me. As I love playing in China and have a good record there and other overseas events.

Fans: What will you do when you are behind in the match?

Mark: I try my best not to get too down or dissapointed with myself too much otherwise you are helping your opponent to beat you.

Fans: Describe your playing style.

Mark: I think I'm more calmer and relaxed than any other player, and I think that helps me when the pressure situations arise. Not too sure if I'm more attacking than ronnie, not much in it.

Fans: Your most memorable match?

Mark: My most memorable must be without doubt is beating Stephen Hendry on a respotted black 10-9 in the Benson and Hedges Masters (1998) in Wembley.

Mark's opinion

Fans: The UK Championship of this season will have a new format that matches before semi-final reduced to best of 11 frames. Do you think there will be more short matches in the matches? What influence will it bring to players?

Mark: I am not in favour of it and neither would most of the top pros like as the top boys would say that you have more time to get into a match, but as we got Barry Hearn in to shake our game up, we got to support him 100% and go along with it.

Fans: Tell us about Judd Trump.

Mark: Judd trump is an excellent player but needs to keep improving and practicing hard and not let the last couple of tournaments get to him.

Fans: In the new generation of players, which four are you in favour of?

Mark: My top 4 players in the world to come would be something like Ding, Trump, Selby, Murphy. With either of those capable of winning lots of competitions.

Fans: Who is your favourite player?

Mark: My favourite snooker player was Jimmy White growing up, but now my favourite to watch now is Ronnie.

Fans: You were defeated by Li Yan in PTC1, how did you think about that game?

Mark: I lost 4-3 to him and he played very well, I am not one for excuses but with the wedding etc. I never played much, but what I seen of him he has very good potential and one for the future.

Mark's life outside snooker

Fans: As we know, you play with your left hand. How about eating, holding pens or iphones?

Mark: I eat, use iphone with left hand, also write left hand, I throw play golf and darts right hand.

Fans: Can you play with your right hand?

Mark: I am terrible playing with my right hand, I prefer to put my cue under my body to play a shot rather than try and play with my right.

Fans: Besides as being a snooker player, I know you was a boxer before you turned professional. What other sports do you like?

Mark: I like playing five a side football, bit of golf not as much as i used to though, fishing, but nothing beats getting out on my motorbike when the weather is nice and warm.

PTC1 2011/2012 - Day 5 - O'Sullivan captured PTC1 title

Ronnie is the man of the day.

Ronnie beaten Joe Perry 4-0 in the final in 51 minutes. He hit breaks of 60, 105, 117 in that match.

Last ranking title of Ronnie is Shanghai Masters Champion in September 2010, beating Liang Wenbo in the final. This is his first ranking title in 21 months.

Ronnie chatted with World Snooker officials after his winning
In the last day of the competition, Ronnie tried to make a maximum in semi-final against Joe Jogia but he missed in the last yellow on 120. Ronnie knocked 6 centuries 101, 104, 107, 115, 120, 124 in a single day. He made 8 tons in the 3-day events, more than one sixth of the total.

In the last 16, Ronnie came back from 0-2 down to beat Martin Gould 4-2. Martin commented after the match, 'Lost 4-2 to Ronnie, (himself) started off with 77 and 102. Didn't do much wrong but Ronnie decided he didnt wanna miss so i sat and watched him at his best enjoyed it though'

It was an amazing match in the quarter-final between Bingham and him. Both players  did really well, most frames they won were by one visit. Eventually Ronnie was stronger than Bingham and took the victory.

Let's talk about runner-up Joe Perry. I am glad to see Perry back in form and reached the final. I am delighted to see if he can get into top 16 again in the new season.

Ronnie had a positive and enthusiastic attitude in the PTC1. His effort on the practice table were reflected on the result. He practised hard before PTC1 and he got the payback. I would love to see Ronnie keep this attitude and becomes competitve again.

"My game wasn't too bad," said the three-times World Champion. "Everone was rusty. I'm just having a go and doing my best. This is a big season for me, I'm giving myself one more year, or possibly two, to see if I can improve. It's a work in progress but I do feel some optimism.

"I'm still seeing (psychiatrist) Steve Peters. I still need help although I feel a lot better. There's tournaments all over the place now so I'm just taking it as it comes."

Asked if he had been concerned about dropping out of the top 16, O'Sullivan added: "I don't worry about the rankings, although it's nice to be at the top. If I drop out and have to qualify then so be it. It would only be one match and the conditions at the qualifiers are good. Players come through them and go on to win tournaments so it wouldn't mean I couldn't win titles."

I wish the victory can bring Ronnie a perfect start of the season. His provisional ranking is raised to eleventh after winner's 2000 points is added. I would love to see him back into the top 8 later. Best of luck in the coming tournaments, Ronnie.

PTC1 2011/2012 - Day 4

21.6.2011

The biggest shock of the day appeared in the morning. Li Yan beaten Mark Williams 4-3 though Williams came from 0-3 down to force a decider.Li Yan was a Q School graduate last month - It's a brilliant achievement for Li to beat Williams. However Li Yan was eliminated by James Wattana in the next round.

Stephen Hendry only turned up in a few PTCs last year but this year he starts to concern about it. However Hendry lost to Kyren Wilson in decider in his first round match.

Another Q School graduate Simon Bedford made a successful comeback from behind. He beaten Ryan Day 4-3 from 0-3 down. Well played Simon!

Nick Jennings suprisingly defeated former 2005 World Champion, Shaun Murphy. He came down from 1-3 behind. Murphy made a comment on Nick after the match, 'Well played Nick Jennings. From 1-3 he played like a winner and fully deserved it.'

Graeme Dott had a good day in Sheffield. He won all the matches today and he is on his way to last 16.

PTC1 2011/2012 - Day 3 - A Few Big Names were sent home

The 2011/2012 snooker season has started! 2-day amateur pre-qualifiers ended on Sunday. Today professionals include Mark Selby, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Judd Trump comes to play their opening matches :-)

20.6.2011

Mark Selby played his opener with Zhang Anda who was a Crucible Last 32 finalists in 2010. Selby won it comfortably with scoreline 4-1. Another top 16 player, Stephen Maguire won a thriller 4-3 against Matthew Day despite he is 0-2, 2-3 behind in the match.

Jack Lisowski who was named 'Rookie of the year' on World Snooker Awards this year, secured a 4-1 victory over Ian Glover with 108.

O'Sullivan practised with Chinese players over the weekend for PTC 1
Another notable match in the morning would be 'The Rocket' Ronnie O'Sullivan against Mike Hallet. O'Sullivan started off poorly and was 0-2 down at the beginning. Later Ronnie found his rhythm to win. He scored a 4-2 victory and will be playing Andy Hicks in the next round.
Michael Holt
Michael Holt impressed me this afternoon. He performed superbly! He secured a 4-1 success with 3 centuries (117, 106, 103). 'The shotgun' also earned a whitewash against Les Dodd. Unfortunately Holt was defeated by Joe Jogia in round 5.

'The Whirlwind' Jimmy White had a neck and neck match with Ireland's David Morris. Morris began with 103 and White led 2-1 before Morris levelled the match 2-2. White extends his lead to 3-2 but it goes really tight in the sixth frame. White got 2 snookers needed to force a black spot but Morris won the respotted  black. Morris dragged into decider. Eventually White won the match 4-3. A very intense and exciting match! :)

David Gilbert is the man to beat today. Gilbert was one of the Q School winners last month. On fire Gilbert beats three players (Judd Trump 4-1, Jamie Cope 4-2, Jimmy White 4-1) today! Very well done to him :)

Shock of the day will be John Higgins was sent home. Higgins lost 3-4 to Thailand's Dechawat Poomjaeng in his first match. He won the 2010 IBSF World Snooker Championship to enter the circuit this season. Higgins led 3-1 but Poomjaeng knocks 80, 95 to force a decider. In the decider once again Poomjaeng won it by one visit. But later Poomjaeng was defeated 2-4 by Marcus Campbell.

John Higgins was defeated by Eden Sharav(Right 1)
Eden Sharav is a Scottish amateur and whitewashed Liang Wenbo in round 3. It's never easy for an ametuer to enter the last 16. He beaten Adam Duffy & Gary Wilson as well.

Ronnie O'Sullivan continued his play in the evening. He earned a 4-1 victory over Andy Hicks & whitewashed Bjorn Haneveer. O'Sullivan entered Last 16 and will be back on Wednesday to play PTC Grand Final Runner-up Martin Gould. Gould completed an unbelievable comeback in Round 5, winning the match 4-3 against Nigel Bond from 0-3 down.

There was an interesting clash between Mark Selby & Stephen Maguire in Round 5. The eventual winner was Stephen Maguire, had a victory a 4-2 victory over Selby. Maguire will play against Stuart Bingham in last 16 on Wednesday.
