New Rolling 147 Prize For Ranking Events

The Maximum break prize is back! This time it is in a new format - roll-over for ranking tournaments.

Ali Carter finished 2nd maximum break after O'Sullivan in the Crucible, 2008 World Championship
£5,000 prize is applied for a TELEVISED maximum break on the final stage of all MAJOR ranking tournament. If there is no player make a 147 in the tournament, this £5,000 prize will roll over to the next TELEVISED ranking tournamnet until a player make a televisied 147 can get the accumulated prize .

The prize will be equally shared in case more than one player make 147 on the tournament.

Players will be awarded with £500 if they make 147 on PTC events and all non-televised matches in all MAJOR ranking tournaments. (same rolling principle)

Bendigo Stadium, venue of Australian Goldfields Open
This new rolling 147 prize becomes effective in the current ranking tournament, Australian Goldfields Open.

Players like Ronnie O'Sullivan will sure welcome this rule. O'Sullivan who made his tenth maximum break in September Last year on World Open was an controversial  one. O'Sullivan was about to not potting the final break due to the cancellation of maximum prize started from 2010/2011 season.

He said, "I wasn't going to pot the black to be honest with you because I asked the ref and was told there was no break prize for a 147,".

"Jan talked me into it [potting the black]. My whole thing was I was going to make 140 and leave the black What's the point of making a 147 if they're only going to give you four grand for it?

"I'm surprised. They're getting stingier. I thought Barry Hearn was supposed to be putting more money into the game, not taking it out.

Barry Hearn heard our views. He is bringing the prize back for the players.

It is a good news for the fans too because players will be motivated to produce maximum on TV. But there is a question - Will players tend to try 147 more in the later held tournaments if no player make 147 early in the season? The accumulated prize can be up to  £35,000 if no one takes it until the World Championship.

Will there be any 147 prize for non-ranking tournaments such as Masters? This new rule does not include non-ranking tournaments. This can be widely discussed.

At least it is a new idea from World Snooker under its unstable financial status.

Eurosport Partnership Extended for an Additional 5 seasons

World Snooker announced the partnership with Eurosport and IMG. Eurosport will be extended for an additional 5 seasons (2011/2012 season to 2015/2016 season). Eurosport will broadcast additional 9 tournaments start from this season onwards! :)

Snooker on Eurosport: THE BEST OF SNOOKER
Eurosport has broadcasted snooker since 2003. The sport is helped by the extensive exposure over Eurosport and the world, which led to the new popularity of snooker in Europe. Last season over 96 million different viewers watched snooker on Eurosport and the figures are increasing.

The new agreement signed included 19 tournaments showing on Eurosport per season (which increases from 10). The new events such as Australian Goldfields Open, Brazilian Masters will be broadcasted live in the future. The 3 biggest tournament of the year (UK, Masters, World) will remain be shown.

World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: "IMG has negotiated a fantastic deal for snooker and gives further momentum to the growth of the sport throughout Europe and beyond.
World Snooker Chairman - Barry Hearn
"We have established new events in the continent including the German Masters ranking event and the European PTC tournaments, and we're delighted that all of these will be screened by Eurosport. The spread of snooker in the region has been phenomenal in recent years and this is a key part of our continued efforts to make it a global sport.

"Revenues from our International broadcast agreements are becoming significantly more relevant for our business and the sport as a whole. Expanding these revenue streams will help us to create new events with more prize money for the players."

Another great news for snooker fans is that all 6 EPTCs will be televisied on Eurosport! This is a breakthrough for the PTC events as there was no TV coverage on PTCs last season except PTC Grand Finals.

**However the deal does not feature coverage in the UK region for a few events that will be shown on BBC. They are Masters, UK Championship, Welsh Open, World Championship and possibly the World Open (not confirmed).

Some snooker fans living in UK maybe disappointed by this deal. But I believe most of you can still view it LIVE on BBC :)

WPBSA Statement on Maguire/Burnett Case
World Snooker's governing body has now reviewed evidence provided by the Strathclyde Police over allegations of suspicious betting on a match between Stephen Maguire and Jamie Burnett in 2008.
The WPBSA's findings agree that there was suspicious betting activity on this match by people outside of the sport and this required a detailed investigation by Strathclyde Police. However, there is no evidence to suggest that either player was involved in fixing the scoreline and therefore no regulatory action will be taken by the governing body against the players.
WPBSA Chairman, Jason Ferguson, said: "This investigation has been ongoing since 15 December 2008 and I am pleased to see this matter closed."
It stated that WPBSA has finished reviewing the evidence provided by the Police. They found that there is no evidence to support any of the two players was involved in match fixing. They will not take any regulatory action against the players. The investigation is now closed file.

Amendments To Official Snooker Rules

World Snooker has finalized the official rules of snooker and billards and it takes effective immediately.

For the below is the summary of amendments, or Click Here to download the full and updated rules. It operates in all World Snooker events.

The Referees need some time to revise the new rules :)

SECTION 2:

5. Striker and Turn

The person about to play or in play is the striker and remains so until the final stroke, or foul, of his turn is complete and the referee is satisfied that he has finally left the table. If a non-striker comes to the table, out of turn, he shall be considered as the striker for any foul he may commit before leaving the table. When the referee is satisfied that the above conditions have been met, the incoming striker's turn begins. His turn and his right to play another stroke ends when:

(a) he fails to score from a stroke; or
(b) he commits a foul; or
(c) he requests the opponent to play again after his opponent has committed a foul.

6. Stroke

(a) A stroke is made when the striker strikes the cue-ball with the tip of the cue.
(b) A stroke is fair when no infringement of Rule is made.
(c) A stroke is not completed until:
(i) all balls have come to rest;
(ii) the striker has stood up, in readiness for a succeeding stroke, or leaving the table;
(iii) any equipment being used by the striker has been removed from a hazardous position; and
(iv) the referee has called any score relevant to the stroke.
(d) A stroke may be made directly or indirectly, thus:
(i) a stroke is direct when the cue-ball strikes an object ball without first striking a cushion;
(ii) a stroke is indirect when the cue-ball strikes one or more cushions before striking an object ball.
(e) Following the final stroke of the opponent's turn, if an incoming player plays a stroke/strikes the cue-ball before the balls have come to rest, he shall be penalised as if he were the striker, and his visit to the table shall end.

SECTION 3:

8. Touching Ball

(g) If a stationary object ball, not touching the cue-ball when examined by the referee, is later seen to be in contact with the cue-ball before a stroke has been made, the balls shall be repositioned by the referee to his satisfaction. This also applies to a touching ball which later, when examined by the referee is not touching, the balls shall be repositioned by the referee to his satisfaction.

13. Play Again

Once a player has requested an opponent to play again after a foul or requested the replacement of ball(s) after a Foul and a Miss, such request cannot be withdrawn. The offender, having been asked to play again, is entitled to:

(a) change his mind as to:
(i) which stroke he will play; and
(ii) which ball on he will attempt to hit;
(b) score points for any ball or balls he may pot.

14. Foul and a Miss

(b) If the striker, in making a stroke, fails to first hit a ball on when there is a clear path in a straight line from the cue-ball to any part of any ball that is or could be on, the referee shall call FOUL AND A MISS, unless:
(i) any player needed penalty points before, or as a result of, the stroke being played; (see (b) (ii)
(ii) before or after the stroke, the points available on the table are equal to the points difference excluding the value of the re-spotted black;
and the referee is satisfied that the miss was not intentional.

(d) After the cue-ball has been replaced under this Rule, and the striker fouls any ball, including the cue-ball while preparing to play a stroke, a miss will not be called if a stroke has not been played. In this case the appropriate penalty will be imposed; and the ball on shall be the same as prior to the last stroke made, namely:
(i) any Red, where Red was the ball on;
(ii) the colour on, where all Reds were off the table; or
(iii) a colour of the striker's choice, where the ball on was a colour after a Red had been potted;
and
(iv) the next player may elect to play the stroke himself or ask the offender to play again from the position left; or
(v) the next player may ask the referee to replace all balls moved to their original position and have the offender play again from there; and
(vi) if the above situation arises during a sequence of miss calls, any warning concerning the possible awarding of the frame to his opponent shall remain in effect.

(e) All other misses will be called at the discretion of the referee, unless, before or after the stroke, the points available on the table are equal to the points difference excluding the value of the re-spotted black.

New Format for UK Championship is confirmed

Along with UK Championship in December is moving back to York, a new format will also be launched. Matches in early rounds will be shortened.

Venue changes for UK Championship next season

Last winner of UK Championship staged in York, Peter Ebdon in 2006
There will be a two table set-up at the venue, Barbican Centre instead of four. Under this situation, both tables have large chances to be televised. We can know what's going on on the two tables to avoid missing some exciting matches.

Starting from the qualifying rounds up to quarter-finals of UK Championship, all matches will be reduced to best of 11 and played in 1 session only (all are in best of 17, 2 sessions originally).

As usual semi-final is in best of 17 while final is in best of 19.

In my opinion, it is not bad to have two tables in process but not four. Fans do not need to worry about cannot see their favourite players working on the table.

However I am not keen on the shortening format of UK Championship. UK Championship is another tournament apart from World Championship using the long format. I understand the short format is due to development of TV.

Now people prefer short and fast matches because they will not spend several hours to watch a match that include two sessions. But I really love the long matches, it can test the mental strength of a player. I love seeing some players comeback from behind, long matches always produce excitements.

Long format sometimes brings recovery for players falling behind after the first session. Several comebacks are seen in the last year's UK Championship. Eventual winner John Higgins fought back from 2-7 & 5-9 down against Mark Williams; Runner-up Mark Williams reached the final by winning 9-8 after trailing 6-8.

Snooker needs to change in order to suit the world. In the coming season, World Championship will be the only tournament with long format. Could the new format for UK Championship bring it success? We'll find it out in December.

WPBSA Statement on Maguire v Burnett in 2008 UK Championship

The Scottish Crown Counsel has finished the investigation on the match between Stephen Maguire v Jamie Burnett in 2008 UK Championship. They will not take any action on the players due to insufficient evidence. However WPBSA will handle the case now and the disciplinary committee will investigate the case.

It is the first round match of 2008 UK Championship. Maguire is the runner up of the tournament in the previous year. The match is suspicious to be match-fixed in betting. Jamie Burnett had chance to reduce the scoreline to 8-4 but he failed to pot the last black in the 12th frame. Eventually Stephen Maguire won the match 9-3.

Bookmakers had received large amount of bets from newly opened accounts in Glagsow, all betted on Maguire to win 9-3 which was the correct scoreline. The bookies stated that  there was no money on Maguire to win 9-4 or 9-2. A number of top bookies suspended betting on the match afterwards.

For more details about this issue, you can read Scots snooker stars Stephen Maguire and Jamie Burnett in betting probe written by Neil Goulding
" Following a full and comprehensive investigation into a match at the UK Championship in December 2008, the Scottish Crown Counsel has decided that there is insufficient evidence to justify a criminal prosecution.
This case has now been referred to the WPBSA for consideration of disciplinary proceedings against the two members who contested the match, Stephen Maguire and Jamie Burnett.
WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson said: "We are treating this case very seriously. We will now be given access to the evidence connected with the case, and our disciplinary committee will review that evidence thoroughly."

Watch the video, it is one of the best flukes I have ever seen. In Shoot out 2011, Rory McLeod was 54-57 behind with only 10 seconds left.  He plays a crazy shot on the final pot - It's fluked into the pocket. He won 61-57 over Tony Drago in that round. Amazing moment :)

Venue changes for Masters & UK Championship next season

Two of the biggest tournaments in the year, UK Championship and Masters will move to other venues start from the next season.

The Last man to win Masters in Wembley?
The biggest invitational non-ranking event on the calender, Masters may no longer called Wembley Masters next year. Because it will move to Alexandra Palace which is very near to London. Alexandra Palace is a bigger venue compare to Wembley Arena, hopefully it can attract more fans to witness the new being Masters Champion.

Ding Junhui is the defending Master Champion, possibly the last Masters champion trumped in Wembley Arena. Masters 2012 which only features world's elite top 16 players, will run from January 15 to 22, 2012. BBC and Eurosport will televise the biggest invitational event as usual.

Snooker returns to York Barbican Centre

UK Championship which is currently hold in Telford, will return to stage in Barbican Centre, York. UK CHampionship was staged in Barbican Centre between 2001 to 2006, starts from 2007 it moves to Telford. It is a good news for both York Snooker Fans and players. It will run from December 3 to 11, 2011, wide live coverages by BBC and Eurosport.

China's Ding Junhui, who beat Steve Davis in the 2005 UK Championship final in York, added: 'I'm really pleased that we are going back to York for the UK Championship. It's one of our biggest tournaments and winning it in 2005 was one of the best moments of my career. I've got great memories of playing at the Barbican Centre as the atmosphere is special. While we played there I made a lot of friends in York, especially among the Chinese community, so I'm looking forward to meeting them again and hopefully having their support in the tournament.'
(Source: UK Championship to return to York Barbican on worldsnooker.com)

I am looking forward to see Masters move to a new venue and we are back to a familiar venue in York! :-)
